JUNE NEWSLETTER

Bonjour Parents,

It’s June!  We’ve worked really hard and really well this year.  It went by quickly and we had lots of fun together!  We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and enthusiasm throughout the year.  We had a great year with your children.  Thank you very much for making this teaching experience so rewarding and positive!

For this month, we will be mainly just focusing on our cultural projects and preparing for our “mini-folklorama” on Thursday, June 20 (11:30-12:30).  This is part of sciences humaines, français and English.  Other class routines will continue until further notice.

Mathématiques: We will be mainly focusing on double digit addition with regrouping.  All other math routines will continue.

Sciences de la nature: We have almost finished our solids, liquids, and gases unit, and then we will be learning about buoyancy. We will be designing tin foil boats and testing them out to see how many pennies they can hold!

Home Reading will officially stop the week of June 16, however we strongly encourage the children to continue to read at home in French and in English throughout the summer.  We will need all the books back that week, so please check at home for any books.  To help with keeping up with French during the summer, we suggest listening to music, reading, talking, playing, watching videos, etc. all en français.  It’s a good way to keep a positive outlook in learning another language, it’s always valuable and will help with entering grade three!  Congratulations on a successful year of reading!  Bravo!

We have quite a busy month with extra-curricular activities as well!  Please keep an eye on your school calendar for the month to stay on top of school activities since there are plenty!

Thank you to all the volunteers this year and thank you to all of you for bringing snacks to our parties and class celebrations!  Greatly appreciated!

Hopefully we’ll see you on June 20 for the Cultural Celebration!

Merci,
Mme. Kovach & Mme. Lezlie

This is a wonderful website as all of the books are leveled. Your child can listen to the books and how to pronounce the words, read along, or read independently. A lot of the books we will be reading during our French Guided Reading can be found on this site.
Also, please note that I might be sending home books that are 1 Level lower than your child’s current reading level. This is to work on developing fluency, expression, accuracy, word recognition and pronunciation.

Sciences de la Nature: We will finish our unit on “La position et le mouvement”. We will do experiments to determine how various objects move on different surfaces. We will also talk about friction. At the end of this unit, we will use the design process to construct and test an object with wheels and axles.
E.L.A.:  After we finish our Jan Brett unit, we’ll be doing some activities on the themes above along with starting a unit on Aboriginal Legends.  Our main focus will be to learn what a legend is, read many of the legends and then do follow up activities.  In March, the children will be writing their own legends.
Math: Our main focus will be double digit subtraction without regrouping and then moving on to addition.  This may present a challenge for some children.  I will be sending out a letter showing how I am teaching it in class so that you are aware and in case you want to work with your child at home for extra support.  We will also continue with mitten math.
We will be having our Valentine’s Day party on Thursday, February 14 from 1:00 – 3:30 pm. During this time we will read a story, have a snack, make a craft, and hand out Valentines. The following students have signed up to bring a treat for our party:

December Newsletter

December Newsletter

Bonjour les parents,

December already!  Where did the time go?!  Thank you again for your donations and support toward all the classroom and school charity initiatives.  Your kindness and generosity are much appreciated.

Here’s what’s in store for the month:
Mathématiques: We will continue with number sense, meaning mental math skills and strategies in addition and subtraction.  It is essential that the children understand whole number concepts, place value and basic strategies in order to move on to bigger and more complicated mathematical equations and concepts.  A child who grasps “friends that make ten/friendly numbers”, doubles and the meaning of a number will have an easier time transferring that information to bigger numbers and mathematical sentences.  We will also continue with our measurement unit.  Our weekly routines run throughout the whole year which includes counting, calendar, estimating, word problems, number of the day, centres, etc.

E.L.A.: We will continue with our Robert Munsch Unit.  After the “Lunch for Munschkins” we will be doing a variety of holiday activities.  Regular class routines will continue throughout the year such as journal writing, centres spelling, message book, poetry, etc.

*Just a reminder, that our "Lunch for Munschkins" will be held Friday, Dec. 14th from 11:30-12:30.  We are encouraging everyone to dress up as a Robert Munsch character! J If you have not already done so, please e-mail me or write in the agenda how many guests from your family (if possible) will be attending.

Français: This month, we will be doing a variety of holiday activities.  Regular class routines will continue throughout the year such as journal writing, les sons, question de la semaine, phrase du jour, poetry, etc.

*Just a reminder for report cards that it is fairly common to see 1’s and 2’s for reading and writing in French for the first term. Once we get going with our French guided reading groups and the French home reading program the marks should improve.

Sciences de la nature: We will start a unit on «La position et le mouvement».  We will describe the position of stationary objects using prepositions such as on, under, above, below, around, between, beside, in, etc.

Sciences humaines : We will continue with our unit «Ma Communauté». We will describe our local community and locate it on a map of Canada.

Have a great month!
